Biography

17 Jan. 1802–2 Nov. 1882. Lawyer, politician, businessman. Born in Boston. Son of Josiah Quincy and Eliza Susan Morton. Unitarian. Graduated from Phillips Academy in Andover, Essex Co., Massachusetts, 1817. Graduated from Harvard University, 1821. Admitted to Massachusetts bar, 5 Oct. 1824. Married Mary Jane Miller, 5 Dec. 1827, in Boston. Served as secretary of Boston Athenaeum, 1828–1830. Elected to Boston City Council, 1833; served as president of council, 1834–1837. Treasurer of Western Railroad Corporation, 1836–1848, in Boston. Treasurer of Boston Athenaeum, 1837–1851. President of Massachusetts Senate, 1842–1844. Served as mayor of Boston, 1845–1849. Died in Quincy, Norfolk Co., Massachusetts.
