25 Feb. 1818–30 May 1904. Carpenter, farmer. Born at Barton upon Irwell, Lancashire, England. Son of William Burgess and Martha Barlow. Baptized into Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, 19 Oct. 1840. Ordained a priest, 19 Dec. 1840. Served mission to England and Wales, 1841. Immigrated to Nauvoo, Hancock Co., Illinois, arriving Apr. 1843. Ordained an elder, ca. May 1844. Served mission to Vermont, 1844–1845. Married first Lydia W. Stiles, 13 Apr. 1845, at Westminster, Windham Co., Vermont. Returned to Nauvoo, spring 1845. Ordained a seventy, Aug. 1845. Moved to Burlington, Des Moines Co., Iowa Territory, Apr. 1846. Moved to Westminster, Nov. 1846. Joined Reorganized Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, by 1862. Served mission to Illinois and Iowa, 1863. Returned to Vermont, by Dec. 1863. Divorced, 21 Feb. 1864. Appointed to preside over missions in Vermont and New Hampshire, Apr. 1864. Married second Isabella Winner, 3 Nov. 1865, in Pike Co., Illinois. Moved to Keokuk, Lee Co., Iowa, by July 1869. Left Reorganized Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, by 8 Apr. 1873. Moved to Salt Lake City, by 1879. Divorced, Nov. 1890, in Weber Co., Utah Territory. Married third Alice Denham Saltern, 29 Apr. 1891, in Cache Co., Utah Territory. Moved to near Hyde Park, Cache Co., by May 1894. Died at Smithfield, Cache Co.
