Hollister, David Sprague
Biography
4 June 1808–after 3 Oct. 1851. Merchant, steamboat owner, ship captain, speculator. Born in Middleburgh, Schoharie Co., New York. Son of Stephen Hollister and Anna Sprague. Moved to Newark, Licking Co., Ohio, ca. 1829. Married Mary Ann Wilson, Oct. 1831, in Utica, Licking Co. Moved to Granville, Licking Co., by 1834. Active in abolitionist movement, 1835–1837. Moved to Milwaukee, 1836. Elected deacon of a Baptist church in Milwaukee, 19 Nov. 1836. Moved to Quincy, Adams Co., Illinois, 1842. Moved to Nauvoo, Hancock Co., Illinois. Baptized into Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, by Mar. 1842. Received elder’s license, 17 Mar. 1842, in Nauvoo. Member of Nauvoo Masonic Lodge. Admitted to Council of Fifty, 18 Apr. 1844. Attended Democratic Party’s national convention in Baltimore, 1844. Ordained a high priest, 7 Sept. 1844, in Nauvoo. Returned to Baltimore, before Feb. 1845; ran a liquor store, 1845–1847. Moved to Philadelphia, by 1847. Sold lands in Philadelphia and purchased ship to sail to California, 1849. Died in California.
